The Role of Functional Lab Tests in Nutrition

Functional lab tests are helpful in revealing where dysfunction or imbalances may lie. It allows us to dig deeper and provide a more personalised, targeted approach to nutritional recommendations and supplements. Clients often tell us they feel relieved to have some answers and gain insight into why they feel the way they do.

What is Functional Testing in Nutritional Therapy?

In a nutshell, functional testing provides an in-depth picture of our health, pinpoints areas of imbalance, and where we can intervene before further health issues develop. Functional testing involves assessing the body's physiological functions and biochemical processes using ranges and markers that indicate optimal function rather than merely identifying disease or the absence of disease. This provides us with valuable information so we can ensure our body is operating at its best and reduce the risk of future health problems. These tests cover many areas from hormones to digestive function, nutrient levels, and even DNA. Testing is not always necessary but you are unique and we can take a targeted approach to your nutritional plan.

Functional Testing

At Longtail Nutrition, we offer personalised nutrition and functional testing services to help you achieve your health goals.

Hormone Health

Imbalanced hormones can influence PMS severity, weight, mood and the way you feel. Testing is helpful in identifying where imbalances lie in sex hormone and adrenal function in both men and women. It can provide insights into the symptoms of PMS, PCOS and menopause. As well as weight gain, fatigue, low libido, sleep and mood issues in men and women

Gut Testing

The condition of our gut is central to optimal health.  An unhealthy gut can be linked to autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances, skin issues, chronic fatigue, depression and cardiovascular disorders. The test examines the health of your microbiome, your digestive capacity and functioning, including the strength of your gut lining. The results are always analysed in the context of your symptoms, nutritional intake, lifestyle and environment.

DNA Testing

The advantage of testing our DNA is that we can use our results to inform our health as we age or our health circumstances change. The genes tested are influenced by nutrition and lifestyle so we can optimise our health and prevent disease in the future. I am trained to analyse a range of DNA reports but recommend particular reports depending on your situation and where you would like to focus. Many of the reports compliment each other because they interlink, I always provide options that make the most sense for you.

Comprehensive blood testing

Testing your blood can pick up on underlying dysfunctions. We can intervene before problems arise or tackle current areas that need support. There are price options for blood testing so they are more likely to fit into your budget.
